Why Halloween is the Best Holiday: A Perspective on Values

Halloween has long been my favorite season in Canada and the U.S. to the point that each time I hear complaints about Halloween treats coming out too early, I begin to mute the naysayers.

Halloween is objectively the best season, and I intend to make my argument from the values perspective. See, there are the things that a holiday like Christmas will say it’s all about. However, it’s Halloween that stands as a ritual that walks its own talk. Here are the reasons why:

Community

At Christmas and Easter, we spend the vast amount of time with our family. We can say it’s all about peace on earth, but mostly it’s about overeating until midday naps on the couch. Not that there’s anything wrong about that, but that’s what it is. Donations are requested and received at this time, but it’s to institutions that rely on those funds, not to our neighbors directly. A small handful, usually from the classes that have the least ability to share, will find themselves volunteering for a Salvation Army kettle or soup kitchen once in a while, but that’s often a small sacrifice before a huge Christmas gathering.

The purpose of Halloween is to remind the fortunate that they should share what they have with strangers. While the deep origins go back to celtic times, as a harvest…
