Reconciling disciplines — Wither Specialization, or are we merely choosing our work-friends?

It’s been a big happy journey through policy, business and all sorts of disciplines.

Look, I have worked in so many university departments, I’ve become a bit too spread out. I feel confident that someone will see what value I bring to their company, but until then, I hope to bring value to you. Here’s a tally:

  • In highschool my passion was Chemistry. I was also interested in other sciences like Biology and Physics. I was much better at the former than the latter.
  • I worked for the Dalhousie Department of Music as a marker for a course on Listening to Music. Adrian Hoffman’s class was an inspiration to me, and I still take so many lessons from his ideas about how music relates to our everyday life. As my kids get into drumming and keyboarding I am so very proud of their ability to illustrate emotions through sound. It’s not something to be underestimated. Just watch Rocky. Now that I said that you already can hear the theme, I know it. You may have already run up some stairs in Philadelphia with that theme in your head.
  • I lived in the Department of English, also at Dalhousie. I won 1st place in the Clare Fooshee Poetry prize. I remember my poem was about a paper clip and how such a simple thing held together so many ideas that would be judged by a bunch of people I did not know.
